Airconditioner Mister Project
The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight but has no vision. - Helen Keller
This project saves money on air conditioning costs. It has been running here for 4 years now without a break down. Basically 6 water / air misters turn on automatically when the air conditioner turns on. The misters saturate the exchange air going into the outside heat exchanger unit. Air is mostly an insulator and by pre-misting the exchange air, the echanger unit greatly increases efficiency. This translates in a 30 to 40 % reduction in electrical cost. It takes 30 dollars and about 2 hours to set up...and no soldering. One of the common concerns is that the water might couse damage to the outside exchanger: no it doesn't. The outside exchangers were designed to be outside...in the rain and stuff.
The setup is simple....very simple. get a 12 dollar gardenhose, 24 vdc electronically actuated valve (from Home Depot). Connect one end to a garden hose ( I use a multi-port waterhose setup), and the other to an outside patio mister kit. I used tomato plant stakes to mount the misters. Aim the misters at the outside of the exchanger....Air is being sucked in and then blown up / out...like a car radiator. Connect the wires from the 24 VDC right in parallel with the thermostate wires from the house. ( The thermostat wires from your house go inside the unit.....they are 24 vdc and are used and rated to turn on the same type of relay on switch to the outside heat exchanger.....oh and they are usually already using electrical twist ties so you don't have to crimp or solder wires.)
The garden hose pressure can be left on for extended periods i.e. overnight a couple days. I did have a garden hose bust a couple of times but that is because i used cheap garden hose. The only other thing that does happen is that after 4 years there is some calcium or lime build up on the outside of the exchanger....I used the house hold kitchen sink de-limer to spray on and remove it. Thats about it....it works to reduce cost by chilling the air better....you'll feel the difference.....and thus the air conditioner stays on less time to do the job....cycles less. 30 to 40 % savings. I tried to give this one away many years ago ......now they are using similar setups in the Las Vegas, Nevada area and selling them as 500 dollar retro fit. This costs 30 bucks total and does the same.
